You may have heard the phrase “if you don’t like the weather in Iceland, wait 5 minutes”? We can confirm, this is very true! The weather in Iceland is very unpredictable and changes quickly. You might set off on a bright sunny day and be battling a snowstorm a few minutes later.
But don’t worry, it’s all about the preparation and clever packing. Read on for our golden rules when packing for an Iceland trip and our essentials packing list.
- It’s all about the layers
Probably the best kept secret there is. Raining? There’s a layer for that. Windy? There’s a layer for that. Cold? There’s a layer for that.
Jeans are your number one enemy in cold weather, so avoid those all you can. But, paired with a good pair of windproof trousers this can be a winning combo when travelling in spring for example where it can be quite chilly at times, but perfectly fine other times.
Layering on and off therefore really is a smart move when travelling in Iceland during all seasons.
- Pack for warmth, even in summer
Summers aren’t exactly tropical in Iceland, 10-15 degrees and us Icelanders call it a heatwave. So packing for warmth during a summer visit is always a good idea. In the worst case scenario, you won’t need to use them.
- The right shoes really are everything
Iceland is all about the outdoors so getting the footwear right is essential. You don’t necessarily need heavy duty hiking gear if you’re planning to visit sights such as waterfalls, parks and other natural attractions but something with a good we’d highly recommend. It’s probably best to keep the fluffy designer boots and trainers at home in winter, as there will most likely be ice and snow and those simply won’t cut it. Simple snow and ice grips that go over your shoes are pretty clever though and will keep you sturdy.
- Don’t forget the swimsuit!
A trip to Iceland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a thermal pool. The Blue Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Sky Lagoon, Krauma Nature Baths… The list goes on. And for those, you’ll need to pack your swim gear.
- Your Iceland holiday suitcase essentials:
- Passport
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Windproof jacket and trousers
- Warm base layer such as fleece (or even better, wool)
- Hat or headband
- Camera
- Scarf or buff
- Gloves
- Warm socks (again, wool is best)
- Swimwear
- Water bottle
- Good walking shoes
- Sunscreen (even in winter, especially if skiing!)
- Ice and snow grips in winter
- Comfortable travel clothes
- Sunglasses (yes, the sun does make an appearance!)
- Travel adapter (two pin European plug is what you need)
It’s worth mentioning that for many excursions such as snowmobiling and ice walk, specialist gear like snowsuits and ice crampons are provided as part of the excursion.
And finally, leave the umbrella at home. Umbrellas have never really been something that works in the Icelandic winds! Ever seen a waterfall travel upwards? Only in Iceland!
