The Fire and Ice Ultra is a marathon across 250km (that's roughly 155 miles) in the highlands of Iceland and it starts on Monday 31st of August 2015.
Runners start at the edge of Iceland’s largest Glacier…100 miles from the nearest road, and cross the most recently formed ground on the planet. The race is partly run over the area where Iceland had its most recent volcanic eruption. The eruption started on 31 August 2014, and ended on February 27th, 2015. The lava field measures more than 85 square km. Only Fire+Ice Ultra has permission to venture here.
This Ultra Marathon is certainly a very special race- and not only for the challenge it will pose to those participating! It's also for the incredible raw and extreme beauty of the Icelandic environment in which the event takes place.
We are expecting a fantastic group of runners competing this year. A special mention goes to Mohamad Ahansal who ran the race last year and is coming back for more! Mohamad along with his brother Lahcen, has won 10 and 6 editions of the Marathon des Sables MdS, or the Sahara Marathon, considered the toughest foot race on Earth.
Another special mention goes to Karma Geljen Sherpa. Karma is co-founder of the NGO "Karma Project" which has been using tourism as a means of funding education and medical services in remote Himalayan villages.
We will be posting news and pictures from the race on the All Iceland facebook page, also follow The Fire and Ice Facebook page for updates.
