Itinerary Suggestion
Day 1 - Arrival
Pick up your rental car from the airport. Drive to the hotel in the countryside. Depending on your arrival time and time of year you're traveling, you might want to do some sight seeing on route.Stay two nights in South Iceland at Hótel Stracta or similar.
Day 2 - The Golden Circle or South Shore Drive
The Golden Circle is a fascinating experience. Visit Þingvellir National Park; the original site of the oldest still existing parliament in the world. You can explore the world-famous Geysir area, where hot springs are in abundance, geysers erupt and pools of mud bubble. You can also stop by the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall. You may want to take an optional snowmobile ride on the Langjokull Glacier, or go river rafting or take a riverjet ride along the Hvítá river.Optional activity: Glacier Walk at Sólheimajökull - Ideal tour to add on to your self drive adventure. Drive to the base camp and enjoy a 3 hour Glacier Walk where you explore the wonderland of Ice Sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses on this breathtaking glacier. Your expert guide will teach you about the behaviour of the glaciers, their impact on nature and let you enjoy the spectacular surroundings and features of the glacier itself. This is an easy tour and no previous experience is necessary. The guide will provide you with the safety equipment needed and teach you how to use them. A unique experience!
Optional activity: Snowmobile ride at Mýrdalsjökull (valid drivers license required) - The South of Iceland is spectacular from "below" but nothing beats experiencing it from "above" and snowmobiling on the top of Mýrdalsjökull allows you to do just that! It is an icecap covering one of Iceland's largest mountains, Katla. Total duration of the tour is about 2 hours with 1 hour on the snowmobile. Warm overalls, helmet, transport to the glacier by superjeep and expert guidance included in the price. This is ideal for first time riders and individuals that are looking for a fun, scenic ride experiencing the wilderness, glacier and breathtaking views.
Day 3 - Reykjavik
Drive to your hotel, located in central Reykjavík. Explore the capital, enjoy the geothermal outdoor swimming pools and spas or choose to dine in one of the gourmet restaurants in the city. We will send you plenty of suggestions for activities, restaurants and the "must sees" in the city.Overnight stay in Reykjavík at Fosshótel or similar 3 star hotel or upgrade your stay to 4 star.
Day 4 - Departure
Depending on your departure flight, you migh have some time to do some last minute shopping or take a city stroll. Head to the airport about 3 hours before your flight, drop off the rental car and depart for home.Optional: Visit to the Blue Lagoon via airport - If flight time allows, you can take an optional trip to the world famous Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa on your way to the airport. The lagoon is ideally located between Reykjavik and Keflavík International Airport and therefore it is convenient to use this time to visit before your flight. Enjoy the Blue Lagoon for 2-3 hours. You can book a treatment if you like, have a lunch at the Blue Lagoon or just relax in this wonderful spa. Continue on to Keflavík International Airport about two hours before your flight. You can also go on your way from the airport upon arrival, if flight time allows. Pre-booking is essential.
