Fire and Ice Ultra 2017
The Fire and Ice Ultra in Iceland is certainly a very special race, not only for the challenge it will pose to those participating but also for the incredible raw and extreme beauty of the Icelandic environment in which the event takes place. The 250 km 6 day stage race starts near Europe's Largest Glacier (The Vatnajokull Glacier), then winds its way north through Iceland's most extreme and remote landscape.
- Land of boiling mud pools, spurting geysers, glaciers and waterfalls
- Probable the Toughest Multi-Terrain Race in the World!
- All Iceland can take care of all your travel arrangements for the race as the official travel partner and sponsor of the Fire and Ice Ultra
This event takes place in one of the most remote and pristine parts of Iceland. The race takes place in August 2017. The package covers the trip from The UK, including flight to Keflavik International Airport in Iceland, on to the capital, Reykjavik, where you board a flight to Akureyri in the North of Iceland.
The Ultra race program starts in Akureyri, where you stay the first night and the last night.
You head into the wilderness and start the race. The 250km footrace will comprise 6 stages over 6 days with stages varying in distance from 20km up to 60-70km (distances approx, to be confirmed after final route recce). Don't be fooled by a potential 20km stage, in all likelihood these might be the hardest 20km of your life. Every day will be a different experience, either through the challenge it presents or through the incredible landscape this area of Iceland has to offer…… or a bit of both!
The program ends in Akureyri where you take the flight back to Reykjavik and the flight to the UK in the afternoon following day (Sunday).
All Iceland are one of the sponsors for Fire and Ice and the official travel partner for the race from the start. We offer a complete travel package taking care of all the ground arrangements for competitors including flights from the UK to Iceland, as well as internal flights and transfers while in Iceland. Because of the start location of the race, this can be tricky to organise independently in terms of logistics which is why Fire and Ice has partnered up with us making this easier for competitors.
The Race starts:
2017: Monday 28th August
2018: Monday 27th August
We are already taking bookings for the next season!
See details about the race at Fire and Ice - Lava fields, volcanic ash, steam vents and boiling mud pools. Sounds like fun?
26th August – Athletes arrive in Akureyri, known locally as the Capital of Northern Iceland. We will meet you at the airport and transport will be provided to the accommodation in Akureyri.
Depending on the time of day you arrive, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy the town and stock up on last minute items.
Itinerary of the Fire and Ice Ultra Race
Start at the edge of Iceland’s largest Glacier….100 miles from the nearest road, and cross the most recently formed ground on the planet. The race is partly run over the area where Iceland had it's most recent volcanic eruption. The eruption started on 31 August 2014, and ended on February 27th, 2015. The lava field measures more than 85 square km. Only Fire+Ice Ultra has permission to venture here. See more itinerary details here:
6 Days & 6 Stages:
- Complete the 250 km, 6 day constantly changing Icelandic terrain.
- Run unassisted from the Glacier in the centre to the hot springs near the coast
- No navigation required
- Most importantly to earn this challenge, you must be self-reliant, carring everything you need:
- Food and Water, Clothing etc.
- The Fire and Ice campsite team will set up tents for you and provide hot water, but that should be it. This is your personal challenge!
- Of course your safety is paramount and a highly experienced team will have 4wD vehicles on the course and at manned checkpoints, should you require medical help or assistance.
You might want to consider extending your stay in Iceland to further explore the Island and/or perhaps go Whale watching which you can do locally or perhaps return to the Capital Reykjavik. From Reykjavik it is also possible to go Whale watching and the famous Golden Circle is on the doorstep (comprising the famous exploding Geysers, Gullfoss Waterfall and the oldest Parliament in the World at Thingvellir where the continental divide between Europe and North America is very prominent and spectacular.
Then there is the South of the Island with its (literally) explosive scenery and shoreline including Puffin colonies and the site of the recent Volcanic eruption. You might also like to have your friends or family join you in Akureyri for the final Evening and to accompany on your further adventures.
If this is something of interest it can certainly be arranged through us at All Iceland.
