Winter Wonder Guided Tour
A 5 day large group tour in winter wonderland Iceland where, in addition to visiting the most famous places of the country, we will also hunt for the magnificent Northern Lights. This is a real adventure of a tour including such highlights as the famous Geysir hot spring area, the Glacier lagoon, beautiful waterfalls and much more. The tour is designed to maximise your chances of witnessing the amazing Northern Lights. We will stay in a hotel located in the countryside and the itinerary may be adjusted when an opportunity to witness the wonders of the Northern Lights arises. However, despite our long experience in leading groups, please note that the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon that is very hard to predict, hence sightings cannot be guaranteed.
- Experiencing Iceland most famous places and hunt for the magnificent Northern Lights
- A truly wonderful guided tour including the famous Geysir hot spring area, the Glacier Lagoon, viewing of the Blue Lagoon and so much more
- Enjoy Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland
TOUR ITINERARY - 4 NIGHTS
Day 1 - Reykjavík
Arrival transfer (by bus) from Keflavik airport to Centerhotel Plaza that is located in the heart of the old city center of Reykjavík. Despite its location and the city lights, Northern Lights can often been seen there. The hotel offers wake-up service if the Northern Lights appear.
Day 2 - The Golden Circle and South Shore
We tour the renowned Golden Circle including a visit to Thingvellir National Park where the forces of the Great Atlantic Rift are clearly visible. This is where the North American and European tectonic plates drift apart at a rate of 2-6 cm per year. Thingvellir is also the place where the ancient Icelandic parliament was established in 930. Then we head for the famous Geysir hot spring area, where Strokkur erupts every 5-10 minutes. We also visit the Gullfoss (Golden) waterfall. After visiting these world famous sights and a visit to local horse stable and a greenhouse, we drive through the landscapes of South Iceland we will visit the Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Center at the foot of the volcano. A short film (20 min) portrays the spectacular natural event, and the hectic times and incredible challenges met by the family farm of Thorvaldseyri. We then drive to our accommodation near the town of Vik, where we will stay for 2 nights at Hotel Katla. If weather permits we head for a Northern Lights hunt, the guide chooses the night with better prospects.
Day 3 - Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
We head east, along the southern shore to the unique Jökulsarlon Glacier lagoon. The lagoon developed around 60 years ago with continuing process of calving and falling of icebergs from the glacier tongue Breiðamerkurjökull. These icebergs are seen in two shades, one type in milky white, while the other type is in bright blue colour, which is interplay of light and ice crystals. The lagoon is filled with fishes that drift in from the sea along with the tides. Seals gather in large numbers at the mouth of the lagoon to catch the fish during the winter, which is a sight to watch. On the way back to Vik we also visit Skaftafell national park that is part of Vatnajökull national park and contains some of the most prized natural sights of the country.
Day 4 - Volcanoes, Waterfalls and Blue Lagoon
Driving along the southern coast we encounter highlights such as the waterfalls Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss as well as the glaciers and volcanos of Myrdalsjökull/Katla and Eyjafjallajökull. The final highlight before getting back to Reykjavik is the spectacular Blue Lagoon. You have a choice of viewing the lagoon or enjoy soaking in the mineral rich water with its fine silica mud (bathing admission not included but must be pre-booked before departure). In the late afternoon we arrive in Reykjavik, where we will stay at Centerhotel Plaza.
Day 5 - Departure
Transfer from the hotel in Reykjavík to Keflavik airport or extend your stay and stay longer to enjoy the northernmost capital of the world.
"We booked the Northern Lights Winter Wonder in Feb 2015. Its was absolutely one of the most enjoyable holidays i have been on. The tour itself was magnificent; the Golden Circle, Glaciers, the Glacier Lagoon and Blue Lagoon were highlights over the 3 days were touring. The tour guide was so friendly, helpful and very funny which made the experience even more enjoyable. On Sunday, the day we were due to go to the Blue Lagoon and back to Reykjavik, we found ourselves stranded right in the middle of a heavy snow storm. The staff at the hotel in Vik couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating with our additional stop over, and the staff at All Iceland responded to my emails and assisted with any queries i had with the extension of the trip. The following day, our tour continued to the Blue Lagoon and back to Reykjavik. With help from Jorunn (All Iceland), our transfers to the airport were rearranged and we made it to the airport a day later with no issues. Id like to thank all the staff at Icelandair Hotel, the staff from All Iceland and our tour operator for making our trip so enjoyable. I will, without a doubt, be returning to Iceland in the future, perhaps in the summertime to see some of the wildlife and for some glacier walks. "Thanks again, Stephanie and Grant "
