DIVING AND SNORKELLING IN SILFRA - POPULAR: PRE-BOOKING ADVISED!
Price range: £££ (minimum age 12 years old)

Snorkeling in Iceland is an activity that everyone who has learnt to swim, enjoys extreme sports and is not afraid of water or cold can enjoy. Non-swimmers and pregnant women are not allowed on this tour.
The Silfra fissure in Thingvellir National Park is notorious for its amazing visibility and underwater landscape. Melt water from Langjökull glacier, located about 50 kilometres from Lake Thingvellir, travels for over 30 years through lava fields before flowing into Silfra River. This filtering process makes the Silfra water as clear as water can be. Snorkelers experience a visibility of over 100 meters and can drink the water while swimming in it. The fissure is the result of the American and Eurasian continental plates drifting apart. Divers are literally diving between the continents. Your guide will walk with you to the platform and give you a briefing before gearing up. Since the water is cold, the snorkeling tour is conducted in dry suits. These suits will keep you dry and the thermo undergarments provided will keep you warm and comfortable. Various other tours are available including Diving tours. Ask us for details.

The cave itself is an 8000 year old lava tube created by volcanic eruption from a nearby crater in the Purkhólar crater family. As the lava rushed down the hill in a lava river it began to cool on the surface, creating a crust on top of the lava river. As the eruption stopped, all the lava from underneath this crust continued to drain out. That eventually left behind empty tube with roof on top that gradually cooled down.

Geothermal heat was discovered in the area a while back when people living around the lake noticed certain spot that curiously did not freeze in the wintertime. Back in the day these spots where used for washing clothes during winter time when it was difficult to find water. These spots also became the center of a myth about Tuska (e. Rag), a creature that used the geothermal springs to get up to the surface. After that the spots become known as Tuskuvakir.
The Icelandic name for ice-free patches like these is “Vök” (plural Vakir). These spots are now the main attraction at Vök Baths and fill the floating infinity pools of warm water. Our guests experience the beauty of bathing in these geothermal spots in Urriðavatn lake and create a special connection the nature surrounding Vök Baths. We across the rivers Grafarlandaá and Lindá and make a stop in the nature reserve Herðubreiðarlindir (nearby mt. Herðubreið). We head to Dyngjufjöll, where the main goals are, first the canyon Drekagil, and then the caldera Askja. From the parking by Vikraborgir (craters), we take a walk to the lake of Askja and the crater Víti. This is about 2,4 km one way. During summer 2015, we had bit changed our normal itinerary, added in to visit Holuhraun, the new lava field from eruption 2014, where warm water (which is actually small part of source of a glacier river) was streaming from the lava field, and as result, there was new natural bathing place (temporarily). How circumstances will be there summer 2016, time will show. Finally, we turn back to Mývatn.
