Northern Lights Hunt in South and West Iceland

    • This self drive holiday is ideal for those wanting to stay a bit longer in Iceland and see a bit more of what the county has to offer. Travel to Iceland in late autumn or early spring and discover the beautiful Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). Do something extra special this winter like snowmobile riding on a glacier, bathe in natural geothermal waters, see the famous Geysir hot spring area and explore the wild and untamed Icelandic scenery.       Day 1 - Arrival
      Pick up the rental car at the airport and start your trip by driving to the city.

      Accommodation is in a double/twin room in the hotel in central Reykjavik. Enjoy Reykjavik by night and look out for the Northern Lights in the evening or Book an optional Northern Lights tour at your hotel.

      Overnight in Reykjavík at Fosshótels or similar 3 star hotel. Upgrade to 4 star hotel available, Fosshotel Reykjavík or similar.

      Day 2 - The Golden Circle
      Visit Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir hot springs before stopping at the historical site of Skálholt. Enjoy dinner at the hotel’s restaurant before going hunting the Northern lights.

      Stay 2 nights at Hotel Stracta or similar.

      Day 3 - The South Coast
      Take a tour along the south coast to visit the saga museum at Hvolsvöllur, Skógafoss waterfall and a turf farm as well as the endless black sand beach at the town of Vík. You will be impressed by the contrast of white snow and the black beach.

      Day 4 - Þingvellir
      Drive today via Þingvellir National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site before towards West Icleand.

      Stay for two nights in Fosshótel Stykkishólmur or similar.

      Day 5 - Langjökull Glacier
      Go for an optional superjeep tour on the Langjökull glacier, where you can also experience a ride on a snowmobile. A walk around the hotel in the evening is a perfect to finish the day, you might be so lucky to see those northern lights everyone is raving about.

      Day 6 - Borgarnes
      Explore the valley of Borgarfjörður with its waterfalls, hot springs and historic sites. Spend the afternoon in Iceland’s capital.

      Stay for 2 nights in Reykjavík at Fosshótels or similar 3 star hotel. Upgrade to 4 star hotel available, Fosshotel Reykjavík or similar.

      Day 7 - Reykjanes Peninsula and Blue Lagoon
      Continue your exploration of south Iceland on the Reykjanes Peninsula and stop at the famous Blue Lagoon. The geothermal areas Gunnuhver and Krýsuvík on the peninsula are well worth the visit as well as the picturesque Kleifarvatn lake. You don´t want to miss the chance to cross between the two tectonic plates of Europe and North America on the bridge between continents.

      Day 8 - Departure
      If time allows, go to central Reykjavík to shop for the last souvenirs and enjoy a coffee/tea in one of the city's restaurants or cafés, you might also want to visit the Blue Lagoon on your way to the airport. You must be at the airport 2 hours before your flight. Return the rental car at the airport and depart for home.
