Depending on your arrival times, you may have time for Northern Light hunt tour.

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis are a spectacular natural phenomenon. The locations visited are different every tour since we go where it’s most likely to see the Northern Lights each day. This tour is depending on weather and sightings are not guaranteed. If you don't see the lights on your tour you are welcome to join the tour again free of charge the following night. You will be picked up from your hotel at 8:30 / 9:30 pm by an experienced English speaking guide. You will travel in a coach to the best locations which will vary depending on the weather and viewing conditions. Duration is around 3 hours.

Please note, more options are available such as Super Jeep tour, Boat tours and more. Ask for details.

Day 2 - Head to Greenland

When visiting Greenland, most people want to see the icebergs and the destination to see icebergs is without a doubt is Ilulissat. Due to the town's location north of the Polar Circle there is also a good chance of seeing Northern Lights in Ilulissat.

Flight from Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Ilulissat (duration about 3 hours).

Meet and greet by our local guide. Transfer to the hotel for check-in and information meeting where you will be introduced to Greenland and hear more about the optional day trips available.

Following the welcome meeting your guide will take you on a city walk so you can get acquainted with the town and also get used to the Arctic conditions you will be exploring over the next few days.

Tonight, you will enjoy a delicious dinner in the hotel restaurant ‘Ulo’ which specializes in fresh-from-the-fjords-and- fells cuisine. Seawater from adjacent Disko Bay is regularly used to prepare bread, vegetables, and fish. Other local staples include seaweed, musk ox, Greenland halibut, and Greenlandic herbs.

Included meals: Breakfast and dinner

Accommodation: Hotel Arctic

Day 3 and 4 - Optional Excursion

Enjoy leisure days with a selection of optional excursions from Ilulissat. There are lots of options.

Don’t miss the opportunity to try out some authentic Arctic winter pursuits during your stay. Travelling with a local hunter on his dog sledge is an experience no one should deny themselves. We can also offer snow shoe walks and Northern Light drives on snow scooters – just talk to your guide who will be happy to organise things for you.

For example:

Imagine travelling by dog sledge with your Inuit hunter to isolated villages or to the fishing grounds on the frozen fjords. This is a journey into the world of the old polar explorers. If you prefer to get up close and personal to the Icebergs, the Iceberg cruises on the Ilulissat Fjord provide the perfect opportunity to get close to these gigantic sculptures created by nature.

Dog sledging in Greenland – what you need to know before you go.

Dog sledging in Greenland is first and foremost an AUTHENTIC experience of what hunting in the Arctic wintertime is like. The sledges used are traditional wooden sledges – the design having evolved over the centuries to work perfectly in harmony with the hunter, the dogs and the landscape.

It is not just a leisurely sightseeing trip where you lie back and just enjoy the ride, it is however a fantastic experience if you want to experience REAL dog sledging ‘warts and all’. The local hunter you travel with will be experienced in dog sledging and have detailed knowledge of the area you are venturing into.

However – for the dogs, it does make a difference travelling with TWO humans on the sledge rather than one. Sometimes it will be necessary to get off the sledge and help the dogs (e.g when you are travelling up-hill). At this point the hunter will let you know if you need to get off the sledge and if he needs assistance e.g. in pushing the sledge. The hunter is at all times in charge of the dogs and his judgement in regards to route and travel time will prevail at all times.

There will be times where you will drive over rocky areas which will shake you about and moments later you enter pristine snow giving you the feeling of being the very first people to set foot here.

Appropriate clothing is a MUST!

In order to make the most of your time in Ilulissat it is important to dress appropriately for the Arctic climate.

The average temperature in winter is around -5°C/23°F to -10°C/14°F and we strongly recommend that you bring along warm clothes especially gloves, caps etc. Dress according to the layer-upon-layer clothing principle. This enables you to make fast and easy adjustments to the temperature. The inner layer keeps the body warm, while the outer layer is for protection against snow and wind.

But overall – don’t worry too much: On all our winter tours, you will be able to rent genuine Greenlandic seal skin anoraks and trousers as well as polar boots should you need an extra layer to keep you warm!

Farwell dinner in the evening.
